Thank you for making Food.Shelter.Hope. a success!

On Thursday, April 12, around 200 friends of the shelter attended the 3rd annual Food.Shelter.Hope. event at The Historic Rice Mill Building near City Marina.  Total event proceeds exceed $60,000.

Participants enjoyed photography, art, live music, and exquisite food donated by four fabulous caterers while generating supportive services for our community’s most vulnerable citizens.

Executive Director Stacey Denaux shared the story of the a family of five who recently moved out of the shelter.  Auctionneer Doug Warner, accompanied by Tom Crawford of ABC News 4, led an auction that raised over $23,000 for shelter services.

This once-a-year event is an important way to raise awareness and funds for homelessness and hunger in our community.  We sincerely thank everyone for their support.

Please join us in thanking the sponsors who made the event possible.

Off to Work She Goes- Claudette

Claudette completed a Certified Nursing Assistant certificate program in February of this year.

Claudette is one of those people that you immediately feel comfortable around. Her overwhelmingly positive attitude radiates from her and with a smile as big as Claudette’s, you can’t help but smile too. There’s a reason Claudette is so happy. In February, she graduated with her Certified Nursing Assistant degree from the Trident One Step program. Currently she works as an elderly care specialist through Care for Life. “I feel a lot of joy and love helping another person – another human life.”

Claudette completed her CNA certification in nine weeks and her husband is working two jobs and going to school.

Claudette and her husband of twenty years, Jed, stayed at Crisis Ministries for 10 months. Claudette’s unwavering faith has helped her and her husband a lot, when the going gets tough their favorite phrase is “stepped out on faith.” Meaning that when it seems like the odds are against them, they turn to faith to help them through it.

Crisis Ministries enabled Claudette and her husband to save enough money so they can get their own place. They were careful not to set too many goals too fast and worked closely with their case manager to fulfill a plan that will keep them in a place of their own for good this time. They found a place that “represents us and our hard work.” They moved out on April 10.

Claudette and Jed are ever so grateful for the volunteers and staff at Crisis Ministries that helped them with food, shelter, and hope. Claudette appreciated the services available at the clinic to maintain her blood pressure. Throughout the time they spent at the shelter, Claudette and Jed remained positive and constantly encouraged other guests.  “We want to set an example,” Claudette says, “it’s the up and out program not the lay, stay and play program.”

Seeking healthcare volunteers

Volunteers in the healthcare industry, specifically those who work in clinical positions, are needed to form the Homeless Health Clinic Advisory Committee.

The Homeless Health Clinic at Crisis Ministries provides primary healthcare to anyone in the community who is homeless.  This group of volunteers will meet regularly to guide the work of the clinic and provide input to the Board of Directors.

If you are interested in the Homeless Health Clinic Advisory, please contact Brad Cashman at bcashman@charlestonhomeless.org or 723.9477, x 124.

Volunteer Spotlight - Rich Young

Rich Young first attended a Crisis Ministries volunteer orientation on a Saturday this past October.  The very next Friday, Rich and his family served their first dinner to 55 women and children at the Family Center.

Afterwards, Rich asked for current volunteer needs.  He responded by signing up for 12 Dinners and 25 Breakfasts.  This covered a huge portion of our volunteer meal needs throughout the calendar year.

The capacity of Rich's service and his effectiveness at sharing our needs with others is amazing.  Along with organizing groups, he speaks to others about sending financial contributions to Crisis Ministries.

Ongoing volunteers such as Rich and his family allow our mission to thrive.  Crisis Ministries has served the needs of the homeless in Charleston for 23 years and is able to provide these services because of volunteers who give of themselves.
