Remember how much fun it was to be a kid? Kids spend hours playing with a favorite toy or running around outside with seemingly boundless energy. We often meet children whose situations don’t leave enough time to play. Play therapy is held once a week in the Family Center to ensure that such an important activity is part of a child’s experience while at the shelter. Erin Briggs is a case manager at Crisis Ministries specializing in substance abuse counseling and play therapy. For more than 10 years, Erin has seen the benefits of play therapy for children involved in major trauma, abuse and natural disasters. Experiencing homelessness and living in a shelter is a frightening experience for children as well as adults. However, unlike adults, children struggle with finding words to express their emotions. Frustration can lead to behavioral problems and problems in school. Through weekly play therapy sessions, Erin can begin to understand a child’s emotions and feelings about their current situation. These sessions shed light on the best ways to validate a child’s feelings of safety and self-worth as well as help them feel comfortable with the toys, games and other children that are part of their new surroundings. |
Atlas Technology volunteers time and funding
Atlas Technology proudly supports Crisis Ministries every year by donating money and by volunteering in the Soup Kitchen. This year, Yakisha Simmons hand delivered a $500.00 check to be used for our daily operations and current needs. We depend upon donors and volunteers who understand the importance of giving. Whether donating money or volunteering, this active involvement from companies, churches and members of the community makes Crisis Ministries a continuous success. Grant Highlight-The Joanna FoundationTo support the exciting new projects at our Family Center and upcoming Transitional Living Center, our grant department has sought out funding for ongoing operating expenses. One grant in particular was the Joanna Foundation. Recently, we received notification of a $2,000 grant from the Joanna Foundation for general operating expenses for the Family Center and TLC. The purpose of this grant is to help keep both shelters open and accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the safety and security of single women and families. The Joanna Foundation supports organizations and programs that strengthen community capacity and enhance individual involvement in achieving a better quality of life.
