Homelessness
is a real concern

Charleston is one of the most desirable places to live in the nation. New residents move here every day, and houses commonly sell for $200,000 and up, into the millions of dollars.

But among the natural beauty, history and economic growth, there is poverty. The issue of homelessness is a very real concern.
Each night, there are an estimated 3,000 homeless residents in the Tri-county area, and just 315 available beds at shelters (including the 170 at Crisis Ministries).

The majority of people who seek shelter at Crisis Ministries have lived in the Charleston area all of their lives, nearly half have graduated from high school, and more than half are employed.

Over 40% of the homeless people seeking
shelter at Crisis Ministries are
women and children.
