 2008 Giving Season

The Charleston RiverDogs have partnered with Crisis Ministries for their 2008 season through their Dogs with a Cause program. We are looking for community support to help raise $10,000.00 to our 2008 Giving Season. Starting in June and ending in August, three nights have been sponsored by a different volunteer organization: June 30th – Seacoast Church, July 7th – Glasspro, August 25th – Hands On Charleston. Please join us during one of these nights and show your support for Crisis Ministries. Contribute here to the 2008 Giving Season and “Take a swing for Crisis Ministries”:

 Food For Thought

In America, one in ten households experience
hunger. We know for sure that there are men,
women and children right here in Charleston that
would go to bed hungry, if not for the services of
our Soup Kitchen. Here, anyone who is hungry
can get a hot midday meal. Last year, we served
over 180 people a day.

Funds to support the Soup Kitchen - $25.00

 Shower Me with Love

How many showers, flushes and loads of laundry does a family of 170 experience in a day? How much water does it take to do the dishes for 200 people? For the Men’s shelter, Family Center and Soup Kitchen combined, Crisis Ministries pays over $20,000 in water and sewer bills a year. For just $55, you can keep the water running for the entire day.

 Food Rescue Fill Up

Ever wonder what happens to prepared and perishable
food that doesn't get eaten? It fills a Food Rescue truck
that drives five days a week to grocery stores, restaurants and cafeterias to retrieve excess food. Keep the
truck on the road so excess food can find its way to our
Soup Kitchen. There is no shortage of food to be rescued, but the rising cost of gas makes keeping up with
our routes a luxury. test

 A Good Night’s Sleep

Falling asleep while nestled in your own cozy bed is a luxury that most of us take for granted. At Crisis Ministries, most clients sleep on mats. A pillow and a warm blanket are a giant step up from the violence of the streets. For $50, you can make sure everyone has the necessities for a good night’s sleep.

Mats and bedding for the shelter - $50.00

 A New Lease on Life

You’re in the shelter, you’re working and you’ve found an apartment you can afford. But, how will you ever save enough money for a security deposit and the first month’s rent? For many of our clients, it takes months. Make that time fly and give $150 to pay the first month’s rent or utility deposit for someone trying very hard to find their way home.

Rent/Utility deposit for a client - $150.00

 Bare Necessities - Men’s Shelter

Electricity, heat and air conditioning - without them we are out of business. For 170 people a day who use our facilities, these utilities aren’t taken for granted. Keep the lights on, the pots boiling and the climate comfortable for the men, women and children who make the shelter their temporary home.

 Scales of Justice

Equal representation under the law is a right, not a privilege. However, many homeless clients are unaware of their rights and what constitutes fair treatment. Crisis Ministries’ Homeless Justice Project partners clients with volunteer attorneys and Charleston School of Law stu-dents to provide free legal counsel, which often removes barriers to employment and housing. $50 will offset court costs and filing fees for clients with legal barriers.

Legal assistance for a client - $50.00

 School Days

Education is a primary factor in breaking the cycle of homelessness. We make sure that children in the Family Center attend school. The average homeless child in America moves three and a half times a year. For the temporary period in which the shelter is home, sending a child to school ready to learn is the most important part of the day. Every child has a nutritious breakfast, a bookbag full of school supplies and is dressed appropriately for the classroom.

 A Shot in the Arm

Health care is a struggle even when you have a good job. When you are homeless, it is an extravagance. For many homeless individuals, chronic illness is a major factor preventing them from self-sufficiency. Crisis Ministries’ Health Clinic provides on-site health care to our clients, including health screenings, medi-cation and treatment for chronic illnesses. $40 will provide a client with two visits to the health clinic.

 Off to Work We Go

An on-site Employment Specialist meets with clients to get them back in the working world. From preparing for an interview to practicing employment etiquette after the job begins, our specialist goes the extra mile to assist clients in the most important goal of self-sufficiency - earning an income. GED, high school diploma, and college credit classes are available to those who want to advance their education. Many clients who are already employed need to earn a higher wage to leave the shelter.

 Friend in Need

Case managers and counselors are the cornerstone of services offered at Crisis Ministries. Qualified professionals work with clients to find safe and af-fordable housing. They provide guidance in working a self-sufficiency plan to return to a home of one’s own. Counseling for substance abuse or mental illness is available for those in need. Our counselors maintain relationships with clients up to a year after they leave the shelter, sometimes longer.

 Building Hope...Brick by Brick

TLC Commemorative Brick

Leave your mark with a commemorative brick at Crisis Ministries new Transtional Living Center (TLC). Crisis Ministries’ TLC will house homeless families. Each family will have their own bedroom and bathroom and will share a kitchen, dining and living room. The location on E Street, just one block from Crisis Ministries’ main shelter and Family Center ensures that families continue to receive essential services while developing skills for independent living. While construction cost are covered, a steady stream of donations for operating expenses are needed.

For a donation of $250 or more you will receive a commemorative brick. These bricks will be part of the TLC’s construction and will mark those who made the TLC possible. Your support will provide parents and children a place to call home in which they may heal, grow and stabilize while they wait to return to a home their own.
